SSP 2017 — Our Busiest Meeting Ever image

RedLink launched Remarq™ in mid-May, and announced IOP Publishing’s adoption of the service at the 2017 Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) meeting in Boston. But launching Remarq (and giving away 300 Remarq “Q” cookies) represented only part of what we were doing. RedLink was a Silver Sponsor, which included sponsoring an innovative professional portrait studio allowing attendees to get new headshots done by a professional photographer at no charge (a donation to support the SSP Fellowship program was encouraged). Mary Beth Barilla, our Director of Publisher Relations, was a Co-Chair on the Annual Meeting Committee, in this her third and final year in the role. She received the SSP’s Appreciation Award for her excellent work helping to lead and coordinate ...

A Reminder That Actual Data Matter image

The recent results of the US Presidential election, which surprised pundits and pollsters alike, are a reminder that hidden variables can influence prognostications and projections, which is why having the actual data at your fingertips is so important. Working at a company that helps librarians and publishers “see what they’re missing” by giving them purpose-built access to critical decision-making data brings this point home in a very salient manner. We often work with clients and potential clients who have a more impressionistic view of their market and trends around particular customers or providers, and use these watercolored perceptions to make decisions. As we’ve just seen, this imperfect view can lead to unexpected outcomes and set back sales efforts or budgeting processes ...

The Spirit and Excitement of the Charleston Conference image

Like any great college town, Ann Arbor is buzzing with Fall festivities, a sense of accomplishment that midterms are over, and plenty of football. We know a thing or two about winning at the University of Michigan, but the last few years have been tough. Now the tide is turning, and we are proud to sit next to two top programs, one of which is Clemson University – one of South Carolina’s most distinctive schools. The last time we were second in the nation was a decade ago, when I was fresh out of library school, living in Ann Arbor, and embarking on a new career digitizing historical books and research content. The excitement of that time is exactly how ...

Kent Anderson at EMUG 2016 image

The funding of research, libraries, and publishers has been under pressure for decades. Research budgets are flat or down, even with recent increases in the US. In Europe, austerity measures have siphoned research funding away. This is happening even as more students are being urged to become trained scientists, creating huge pressures on these individuals, on publishers, and on libraries as publication becomes more competitive. With major economies like China entering the picture, the competition has increased all the more. Libraries find themselves in a pinch, as their share of growing university budgets shrinks. This leads to modest increases in their budgets, if any at all, which cannot keep pace with an explosion in published research. At the 2016 Aries ...
